- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar, for caramelizing
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Heat cream and sugar: In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream and 1/2 cup granulated sugar over medium heat until simmering. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Whisk egg yolks: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, vanilla extract, and salt.
- Combine: Gradually whisk the warm cream mixture into the egg yolks, until smooth.
- Pour into ramekins: Pour the custard mixture into 4 ramekins.
- Bake: Place the ramekins in a baking pan and pour hot water into the pan to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center.
- Chill: Remove the ramekins from the water bath and let cool completely before refrigerating for at least 2 hours.
- Caramelize sugar: Just before serving, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar over the top of each custard. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar.
- Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy!
Tips
- For a thicker custard, add an extra egg yolk.
- If you don’t have a kitchen torch, you can caramelize the sugar using a broiler.
- Serve the crème brûlée with fresh berries or a dusting of cocoa powder.
